Dracula Movie Critique – Luc Besson’s Love-Struck Revamp of the Classic Horror Story is Outlandish but Entertaining

It’s possible audiences aren’t clamoring for an updated adaptation of Dracula from Luc Besson, the filmmaker known for stylish excess. And yet, it’s worth noting: his lavishly upholstered romantic vampire tale boasts bold vision and flair – and with its B-movie charm, it could be preferable over Eggers’s dignified recent take of Nosferatu. There are some very bizarre touches, such as a scene that appears to show a geographic divide between France and Romania.

Christoph Waltz as a Clever but Weary Clergyman Hunting Vampires

Christoph Waltz plays a clever but beleaguered vampire-hunting priest – I can’t believe he hasn’t played such a part earlier – who ends up in Paris in 1889 to mark the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. Likewise present is the sinister Dracula, played by the body-horror veteran Caleb Landry Jones using a distorted Eastern European tone similar to Carell’s Gru character of the Despicable Me series. This character he seemed destined to play.

The Plot: A Saga of Heartbreak

The plot unfolds as follows: the vampire lord has traveled ceaselessly the world in torment for hundreds of years following his rise as one of the undead, a consequence for his irreligious grief after the passing of his spouse Elisabeta (a movie debut role for Zoë Bleu, Rosanna Arquette’s child). the vampire has been searching, searching, searching for some woman who could be the rebirth of his departed beloved. Unfortunately, the fortunate female proves to be Mina (portrayed once more by Bleu), the demure fiancee of Dracula’s feeble property handler, Jonathan Harker (played by Ewens Abid), who lately visited to the vampire’s estate to discuss his property portfolio and the tiny painting of the charming Mina attracted Dracula’s gaze.

Besson’s Handling and Lighthearted Touch

Besson structures Dracula’s second-act backstory of worldwide travels wearing flamboyant outfits skillfully, and he willingly includes offering some comedy moments reminiscent of Mel Brooks – like the count’s repeated and futile attempts to kill himself post-Elisabeta’s demise, along with farcical scenes that result after Dracula applies to himself with a specific fragrance in historic Florence, which causes him to be compelling to the opposite sex. Outlandish but entertaining.

Dracula is available digitally from 1 December and for physical purchase from 22 December. It screens in Australian cinemas beginning on the fifth of February, 2026.
