Ethiopia Takes Back Valuable Treasures Following a Long Residence in a German Family
Exactly Twelve ancient artefacts were officially restored to Ethiopia after remaining by a household from Germany for in excess of 100 years.
These treasures, originally gathered in the early twentieth century by Germany's diplomat to the Ethiopian empire Franz Weiss and his wife his partner, were delivered on midweek to the Institute of Ethiopian Studies at Addis Ababa University.
This assortment contained headpieces, shields and artistic works, each viewed as historically important in the nation.
"The artefacts continue to serve as a symbol of the lasting and friendly ties between the German nation and the Ethiopian people," said Ferdinand von Weyhe, the envoy to the East African country.
Dr. a professor, whose parent was born during the household's diplomatic posting in the nation, delivered the items at a ceremony witnessed by the Minister of Tourism Selamawit Kassa.
He stated that the household's intention to restore the items was to "display their appeal with the audience and preserve the heritage and history tied to my parent's beginning."
The artefacts were either considered donations or acquisitions, based on the family.
"I want to thank the Weiss household for actively showing their deep love for Ethiopia by meticulously maintaining these artifacts and crucially ensuring their homecoming to their legitimate country," said the minister of tourism.
She noted that the items would soon be made accessible to the general audience for investigation and educational purposes, terming the decision a landmark in protecting the nation's historical legacy.
"Efforts are ongoing to return ancient items that are found in the possession of private persons and entities throughout the planet," she affirmed.
In the era of colonialism in Africa, thousands of cultural objects were plundered.
The demand by the continent's states for the return of looted objects has been met with a degree of success in lately - though a number of objects are just on loan.
Back in two years ago, the German government was the pioneering country to return a selection of the famous historical items to the Nigerian people in an attempt to deal with its "troubled colonial history."
