Far-Right Former Legislator José Antonio Kast Chosen as Chile Incoming Leader.
Following a conclusive final ballot, far-right candidate José Antonio Kast has secured the top job in Chile.
A Resounding Win
After more than 99% of ballots counted, Kast garnered 58.17% of the ballots, defeating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third presidency, having in the past been beaten by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Platform Centered On Law and Order and Migration
Recognized for his unwavering Catholic views and admiration for the era of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was mostly centered on promises to combat increasing crime and significantly curb migration.
He frequently pointed to migrants, notably the approximately 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for crime rates. Throughout the campaign, he issued an final demand for them to exit before the March 11 handover or face deportation.
His plans included controversial measures such as building camps, high walls, electric fences, and bolstering the military presence on the northern frontier.

Governing Lacking a Clear Mandate
Despite his decisive popular vote triumph, Kast will not command an overall majority in parliament, neither in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even when all rightwing parties are counted together.
This political situation might hinder his policy goals, including a promise to cut public spending by billions within 18 months—a proposal for which he has not provided specifics.
"There are several things about how a Kast administration will operate that remain unclear because he has not explained the way he will do them," commented a political science analyst.
The analyst stated, "Regarding economic policy, it is very likely we will see adjustment measures associated with the right-wing. However the area with much less doubt is on security policy, because that has been his flagship issue during the race."
