Fury Erupts as Trump's Comments on Director Rob Reiner Ignites Sharp Criticism
Individuals from across the partisan spectrum and the Hollywood world are coming together to condemn Donald Trump for his comments in the wake of the shocking deaths of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Social Media Post
Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Los Angeles residence, Trump took to his platform to describe the late director as "anguished and struggling". In a message, he asserted Reiner's death was "because of the hostility he caused others through his enormous, unyielding, and incurable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments then pivoted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".
Law Enforcement Developments and Arrest
Police have since announced the arrest of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in connection with the incident. It is reported his bail was set at a significant sum.
A Wave of Criticism from Public Figures
The response to Trump's words was swift and harsh.
This is a disgusting and despicable statement,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly condemned the remarks. Goldberg pointed to prior comments from Trump regarding political violence, asking, "Have you no decency? Can you get any worse?"
California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "He is a disturbed man."
Echoing this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "What a despicable piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just lost it. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own murder because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."
Rebuke from Within Party
Some GOP lawmakers also expressed dismay.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". Greene also alluded to challenges with addiction and psychological well-being within families.
Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disgraceful" considering the nature of the deaths. He publicly challenged members in his political party to defend the comments.
Reiner's Legacy and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. During a previous conversation, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also warned about the risks of autocracy should Trump return to power.
"We see autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "If we fall, there’s a danger that democratic systems collapse around the world."
Despite his strong opposition, Reiner had in the past shown "absolute horror" and condemned violence for political ends without reservation after the shooting of another political figure.
An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal
Adding a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously recounted the anecdote of the session, noting Trump's request for "a specific hair product" while being photographed on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
