Jailhouse Shock: The Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Time in Prison
He contested the legal system and the law won.
Sixty days after getting a twenty-seven-year sentence for trying to “eradicate” the nation's democracy, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro at last appears destined for incarceration.
Imminent Imprisonment
The found-guilty plotter – who has been living under residential detention in his residence while a number of legal procedures and petitions proceed – is broadly anticipated to be imprisoned in the next few days, amid growing talk that he will be moved to a notorious top-security penitentiary.
Historical Comments on Inmates
During Bolsonaro’s long political career, the far-right ex- paratrooper showed minimal sympathy for Brazil’s inmates.
“For what reason must we provide those dirtbags a good life?” he once pondered. “They deserve to be messed, period. That's my view.”
In another instance, Bolsonaro stated: “If you don’t want to finish in prison, the only thing required is to avoid sexual assault, abduction or rob.”
Prison Facility Debate
Yet the prospect of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda prison top-security prison in Brasília has horrified backers, several of whom this week visited the complex in an seeming bid to dissuade the judiciary from sending him there.
Senator Lucas, a politician from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was part of that quartet, said he expected the elderly figure to be incarcerated in the following week and a half and was concerned his assigned prison could be Papuda.
Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s severe digestive ailments – the result of a life-threatening knife attack during the 2018 presidential political campaign – implied it would be hazardous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His [health] situation is highly critical. He won’t be able to handle it if they send him to Papuda … It will be dreadful,” he added, who also expressed concern about cramped cells and the quality of jail cuisine.
When inspecting Papuda, Lucas noted observing cells holding 40 prisoners: “That’s virtually one square meter per prisoner.
“We spoke to the prisoners and they protest, naturally, of the horrible food,” added the senator.
Supporters Speak Out
He is not the lone figure speaking out before the ex-leader's predicted imprisonment.
Penning in a prominent daily, a different supporter, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “brutal” finale to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” political career and asserted Brazil was about to experience “the biggest political injustice in its record”.
“It is an injustice that gnaws the spirits of many Brazilian citizens,” the former minister said.
Varied Popular Reaction
This could be true due to the considerable following Bolsonaro maintains on the conservative side. However his expected incarceration has also warmed the feelings of numerous individuals who feel he should be jailed for conspiring to stop his successor from taking power – and even conspiring to have him assassinated.
The lawmaker, a politician for the sitting administration's political party, stated: “Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be sent in a dungeon. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in isolation. No one wants Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to lie on concrete. We wish him to get proper handling – but proper care behind bars. He can’t carry on being his personal jailer for his entire life.”
He observed how Bolsonaro allies, who have spent years praising the tough treatment of convicts, had abruptly woken up to their entitlements. “Only now has the conservative fringe – which has consistently asserted that basic rights were not for lawbreakers – opted to tour a jail to learn what circumstances are truly like,” he said.
“The former president is a offender,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he merited “degrading, degrading conduct”.
Potential Incarceration Environment
In spite of speculation that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which now holds about thousands of prisoners, his more likely location appears to be a close prison for law enforcement and other “particular” inmates known as Papudinha (Little Papuda).
His potential cell are considerably more adequate than those in the larger jail, although still a world away from the comfort Bolsonaro experienced while living in the stunning presidential palace, approximately 20 kilometers away.
Based on sources, the cell Bolsonaro could likely occupy in Papudinha measures about 24 square meters – about the dimensions of two parking spaces – and includes a 12 square meter restroom with a water facility and a 130 square foot terrace. “Bolsonaro would be permitted to have a set and additionally a cooler in his cell as long as they were provided by his family,” information indicated.
Political Reactions
He criticized the speculated proposal to send the ex-president to Papuda as “a form of payback” on the part of the judicial authority who oversaw Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will determine his future in the {
