The beloved police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh season, announced by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode season created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the production team.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The last series concluded in recent years with a finale that attracted over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only came this week.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to tackle corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case to date."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of misusing his authority to act as a offender.

However, his case could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the background, the teaser hinted.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans watch the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a new installment."

He added: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston described being part of the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

"Delighted with the announcement and anticipating those mercurial plot developments."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty launched in 2012 and became a highly successful television series of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.

The BBC has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will premiere.

The finale of season six brought the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and producers said at the moment there were no plans for further series.

Nevertheless, the network announced on Tuesday that a new season is now being produced.
