The British tennis star achieved the most notable victory of his career by rallying from a lost first set to defeat world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the early stage of the Paris Masters.

While he had before overcome Alcaraz on two occasions, this win marks Norrie's initial victory over a current world No 1.

"Enormous. Extremely important for me," commented Norrie, who becomes the newest English competitor in the record books to beat a global number one. "Returning from injury last year, I lost in the initial match of qualies here. I just tried to appreciate my game in the second half of the year. To achieve a victory like this, it's the most significant victory of my career, my initial victory over the top player and arguably the most confident player in the world right now."

The British player, ranked No 31, also stopped Alcaraz's impressive sequence of nine finals in a row and 17 consecutive elite tournament victories, which marked the best series of performances in the Spanish star's young career.

Alcaraz seemed to be advancing smoothly towards victory in the beginning as he eased in the first set. Nevertheless, Norrie gradually worked himself into contention by executing with sharper placement and engaging the Spaniard into extended, grueling rallies. For much of the match, the world number one served well but he had difficulty to locate his rhythm with his rally strokes.
