The boxing world has been a significant decline this period, with a scarcity of big events and far less compelling bouts than normal. “This is the most important contest, at the moment, in the heavyweight category. These two boxers have accepted the challenge when neither fighter was required to take this bout. Joe Parker is the WBO interim champion and they have previously mandated the champion to fight him, but the Ukrainian was injured. Joseph insists on fighting.

“Fabio is similarly well-placed and he only had to wait for his time. He said ‘No.’ He chose to box – and against Parker because it offers him an opportunity to skip the line.”

Parker, aging 34 soon, said: “This is do or die. I am not focused on a loss. I honor my adversary and his accomplishments and the way he's trained for this fight. But I am on a different level and I am going to show it on fight night.”

The Perspective of Wardley

Wardley turns 31 in December, and he said: “It's a huge evening for the both of us. It is clearly the most significant bout of my professional life and the greatest challenge I've faced. But whenever I face a tougher opponent I elevate my performance. This Saturday will be the same. The separation between where Joe is and where people think I am has been a recurring narrative in my boxing life.

“He has been going around the block for a extended duration, with a lot of fights on his record. In no way is he an old man but he has been in the sport for a long time and had numerous grueling matches. I too have faced intense battles and I realize they cause wear and tear. He has been in a lot more of those fights than I have.”

But the lingering doubt persists that Parker is likely to be too veteran, and too skilful, for Wardley. He is expected to triumph a grueling encounter with the belief that he is the prime candidate for a title shot against Usyk – still the world’s best heavyweight by a clear gap.
