The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 individuals were killed and over 40 were hurt when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.

The victims are still awaiting formally identified, but police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments before the shooting, saying they were standing when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
