The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller That Blends Survival Horror with Social Deduction Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several fascinating future games, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a girl containing several human souls within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Within her reside four separate personas, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control spontaneously, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie medical facility, though additional clips show the protagonist navigating a desolate chapel.
A World of Individual Dread
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to other people can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The core gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become amplified and attack the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Decision
At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by orderlies who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms growing from their necks are. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the body belongs to them," explains a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players believes a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The last one remaining might be a fake. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
