The Gruesome Animated Film Conclusion That Lingers Audiences
Out of all the mature cartoon movies I’ve ever viewed, no other has stuck with me quite like the dread-soaked conclusion of the viscerally violent as well as deeply subversive 2022 movie Unicorn Wars.
Back in the year 2015, this Spain-based filmmaker crafted a dark, melancholy , often savage universe with a few small , desolate glimmers of hope.
Although The Unicorn Wars feels like it came from a desire to push the medium even more, the filmmaker stated that it was more a try to communicate a widespread, cross-cultural theme concerning “the common origin of all wars.”
This theme is expressed via a band of brightly hued teddy bears , obviously modeled after a popular series of lovable characters.
Growing up in a society built around militarism as well as the military-industrial complex, many of these animals are obsessed with exterminating unicorns, thanks to a sacred text which states the bears they previously were rulers of the woodland, before the unicorns expelled them.
Some have not completely accepted the propaganda, and would rather sample drugs or mate in the forest.
In contrast to their friendly counterparts, these colorful critters show genitals and obvious sex drives.
For a certain especially vicious, skeptical animal, Bluey, the conflict against the unicorns transforms into a road to power — and especially to dominance above his more tender, more compassionate sibling the bear Tubby.
The character behaves aggressively , an apparent sociopath , and while horror overcomes his group and takes his fellow soldiers one by one, he takes more and more control for himself, in increasingly bloody, damaging approaches.
Meanwhile, the horned creatures are experiencing their own terror, in the form of a spreading, deadly beast in their habitat.
“Initially, it seems like a lighthearted film,” the director commented. “However it becomes a more serious and sad film. And ultimately, it’s a horror film.”
The Unicorn Wars commences similar to one of the most playful films by an iconic animator, that uncover a wicked pleasure in allowing cartoon characters curse, shoot each other, or have intimate relations.
Then it becomes something more like a darker film from the same creator, with increasingly graphic violence , a noticeable relation to genuine tragedy of conflict.
In the finale, it is a full-on Grand Guignol bloodbath.
The terror that makes this a perfect Halloween watch starts much sooner than one might expect.
Unicorn Wars is ideal for the most dedicated fans of gore, for fans of intense movies who wish to watch a film they’ve never watched previously, and who can handle a narrative that pulls absolutely no punches.
See it in a dark room free from interruptions, and that ending will dig under your skin and stay with you.
