A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, which kicks off on the 18th of January in Melbourne.

A Landmark Return to Melbourne Park

The event organizers announced on the weekend that the 45-year-old icon will make a return at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Summer Swing

The tennis star had earlier stated in November her intention to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she was likewise awarded a special entry, two weeks before the Australian Open. The Australian Open added that Williams is scheduled to participate in Australia's Hobart International a following week, immediately prior to the start of play at the main venue.

Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in the country and eagerly anticipating playing during the Australian summer," Williams stated. "I’ve had so many incredible moments there, and I’m thankful for the chance to go back to a venue that has been so significant to my career."

Williams' overall record at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 defeats. This year will represent the twenty-second occasion she has competed in the primary tournament field.

Setting a New Record

The tournament pointed out that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to compete in an Open's main draw, eclipsing the mark formerly set by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the opening round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
