The New Mayor Pledges a 'Fresh Chapter' for New York City in Inaugural Address
During an first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an audacious start to his term.
A Groundbreaking Mayor
The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.
An Ambitious Platform
Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:
- Subsidized daycare
- No-cost bus transit
- A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
- A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion expense of these initiatives may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Managing Political Headwinds
The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past social media posts.
Mamdani has sought to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.
The Core Challenges of Governing
Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and ensuring smooth transit service.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.
As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
