Three-time award winner Nikola Jokic endures a 'gut-wrenching' knee injury.

Jokic in action
The Denver Nuggets star secured the NBA's MVP award in three of the past four years.

Triple NBA MVP Jokic sustained a "heartbreaking" knee injury when the Nuggets fell 147-123 to the Heat.

Jokic was hurt in the latter stages of the opening half in an inadvertent coming together with fellow Nugget Spencer Jones.

Jones stepped on the foot of Jokic, and he immediately fell to the floor holding his leg.

The veteran player, who tops the league season in rebounds and assists, recorded a score of 21 points and eight assists in the matchup before incurring the injury.

He will undergo an scan on the following day to assess the seriousness of the issue.

"Right away, he understood he was hurt," said Nuggets coach Adelman.

"This happens in professional sports. Any player that is injured, that's difficult, especially somebody as important as him. More information will come tomorrow."

"The team will adjust as a team. Of course, right now, I am more worried just about him as a person and the disappointment of going through something like that."
