A former American diplomat, a foreign policy expert, observed, "The Russian leader is attempting to derail the momentum toward greater sanctions on Russia." Fried continued, "We'll see tomorrow, but the chances of moving toward a truce by pushing Moscow to engage sincerely appear to have decreased."

The situation followed Trump had in recent days been strengthening his rhetoric toward Russia until Thursday's call with Putin, which the Russian government described as "extremely open and constructive."

European Fuel Sanctions and Market Effects

EU authorities have set a requirement for fuel suppliers into the European Union to demonstrate their products are not sourced from Russian oil, according to a official guideline published on recently. This step is included in the European Union's upcoming prohibition on purchases of refined products processed from Russian petroleum, which forms part of its latest restrictive measures against Moscow over its military actions in Ukraine.

Market experts observed that investment activity appeared to be factoring in the possible end of Indian purchases of Russian oil. Several oil processors in India are preparing to cut purchases from Russia, with expectations of a gradual reduction, as reported by insiders familiar with the matter.

"This represents a positive development for the crude oil price as it would remove a major customer of Russian crude," said a market analyst, adding that oil prices were steady on Thursday.

Security Developments and Infrastructure Attacks

A large-scale Moscow's drone and missile assault targeted energy infrastructure in Ukraine's eastern regions on Thursday, resulting in outages in multiple areas. Authorities in Ukraine stated that Russian forces launched hundreds of unmanned vehicles and dozens of projectiles, along with aerial munitions.

"This autumn, the Russians use daily opportunities to attack at our energy infrastructure," said Volodymyr Zelenskyy, noting that strikes impacted the regions of Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Poltava, northeastern Ukraine and western Ukraine.

International Diplomatic Reactions

Ukraine's representative to Washington, the Ukrainian ambassador, stated that Russia showed its true attitude to peace through the "violence" of such strikes. "Russia once again chose missiles over talks, making this attack into a direct blow to current diplomatic initiatives," she said.

At the same time, the EU's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, announced that the EU had no choice but to strengthen defensive systems against Russian threats. Kallas announced a "plan" to get ready for potential security challenges by the end of the decade, featuring a novel defensive network to be fully operational by the 2027 deadline.

The proposed system, called the "EU defensive program," is projected to begin working in its first phase by the 2026 timeline and be fully functioning by the following year. EU authorities hopes to secure the backing of member state representatives at a summit next week.
